Plush toys are often considered as cherished companions for children, with some youngsters inseparable from them even during meals and bedtime. However, it's important to note that these adorable toys may contain formaldehyde, a substance that can have adverse effects on children's health. In this article, HQTS-QAI will explore the presence of formaldehyde in toys and its potential implications.

Why do plush toys contain formaldehyde?

In reality, the formaldehyde present in plush toys is primarily originates from the textiles used on their surface. This is because the production of toys necessitates a significant quantity of textiles. Formaldehyde is commonly utilized in various textiles for its properties, such as making fabrics resistant to shrinkage and eliminating the need for ironing. During the textile manufacturing process, additives such as softeners, color-fixing agents, waterproofing agents, and adhesives are incorporated, all of which contain formaldehyde. Additionally, these additives may contain harmful substances, including heavy metals. Without the use of auxiliary agents, the quality of textiles would be compromised, and production costs would significantly increase.

To enhance the aesthetic appeal of plush toys, some manufacturers might add dyeing auxiliaries to textiles, primarily to prevent wrinkling. However, a concerning issue arises when the formaldehyde content in these dyeing auxiliaries exceeds safe levels, and heavy metals are also present. Prolonged exposure to toys with excessive formaldehyde levels and close-range inhalation through the mouth and nose can lead to not only headaches and allergies but also potentially fatal situations in severe cases.

What are the dangers of formaldehyde in toys?

Prolonged exposure to toys containing formaldehyde can have serious health implications. The most immediate effect can be the triggering of bronchial asthma attacks, potentially exacerbating existing conditions. In severe cases, such exposure can even be life-threatening. Additionally, formaldehyde has been linked to the development of malignant tumors in the hematological system, with leukemia and lymphoma being the most common types of malignancies associated with this exposure.

The adverse effects of formaldehyde in plush toys on children can be categorized as follows:

  1. Contact Injury: Plush toys, being textile-based and in direct contact with children's skin, can harbor dust, bacteria, and formaldehyde. Prolonged contact can lead to allergic reactions and other health issues. For instance, bacteria on toys can cause diarrhea and lung infections. Furthermore, shared toys can lead to cross-infection among children. Particularly concerning are toys filled with black cotton, a "three-no product," which may contain harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, posing additional health risks.
  2. Inhalation Hazards: Formaldehyde is an irritant to the respiratory system and skin, potentially leading to respiratory and skin diseases. When children interact with plush toys containing formaldehyde, the substance may be released into the air, posing a health hazard. Regular exposure to toys with formaldehyde can result in its inhalation, causing symptoms such as coughing, sputum production, tearing, allergies, and headaches. Long-term exposure to high levels of formaldehyde is even associated with an increased risk of cancer.

How to Keep Children Away from Toys with Formaldehyde?

  1. Careful Examination of Your Purchase
    • Examine the Logo: Ensure that the toy bears the CCC (China Compulsory Certification) mark, indicating compliance with mandatory safety standards.
    • Check the Manufacturer: Purchase toys from reputable manufacturers and brands to ensure quality and safety.
    • Inspect the Packaging: The packaging should be intact, with detailed and comprehensive labeling.
  2. Evaluate the Cleaning Functionality
    • After purchasing the toys using the aforementioned criteria, parents should take the toys out of their packaging at home. If possible, it is advisable to thoroughly clean the toys and allow them to air dry for 24 hours or more. This process helps in the extensive release of any formaldehyde present.
  3. Maintain the Proper Hygiene
    • It is imperative that children wash their hands promptly after playing with toys, especially before meals. Additionally, regular cleaning and disinfection of the toys should be carried out to ensure a hygienic environment for the children.
